Written by ESC Author on 24 Feb 2023 Posted in Blog

A large portion of the world's international students study abroad in the United States of America (USA). Numerous students choose to study in the USAfor a variety of reasons, including the high standard of education, distinctive curricula, multicultural environment, and abundance of chances.

Higher Education system in USA

The American higher education system is renowned globally for its exceptional quality and boasts over 4,000 colleges and universities that offer diverse study options. US degrees are well-regarded globally for their superior academics and superior learning experiences.

Undergrad studies can commence right after high school. There are two primary paths: a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor's degree. Typically, associate degrees are offered at two-year community colleges in the US, whereas bachelor's degrees are granted by four-year colleges and universities. Regardless of the chosen path, students select a specialized field of study known as a major. Along with courses related to their major, students also take mandatory core curriculum or general education classes that help to enhance their critical thinking and communication abilities.

It takes 4 years to complete a bachelor's degree in the US. During the first 2 years, students take general required courses, including math, history, literature, and communication, which provides a well-rounded knowledge across different subjects, a valuable asset in the global job market. The last 2 years are centered on the chosen major.

flexibility of the system

In the US, bachelor's degrees are structured to provide students with the flexibility to switch their major after 1 or 2 years. Additionally, students can opt for a minor (a secondary area of study) in a different subject, pursue multiple majors, or accelerate their graduate studies through an accelerated degree program. The wide range of elective courses available allows students to personalize their degree based on their interests and strengths.

In the US, it's normal for students to transfer universities after 1 or 2 years of undergraduate study or to enroll in a US university after studying abroad. It's not necessary to spend all 4 years at the same institution to receive a degree from it. The flexibility of the system enables students to boost their grades in order to transfer to a more selective university.

After obtaining a bachelor's degree, some students opt to pursue a master's degree, also referred to as a graduate degree. Typically, it takes 2-3 years to complete a US master's degree, though some degrees offer fast-track 1-year programs. Graduate-level education allows for a more in-depth study of a subject and can be either academic or career-oriented.

Work and Study in US

If you study for a bachelor's or master's degree at a US university, you will have numerous opportunities to gain practical experience by work and study in US. Most universities have well-established internship programs and career services. International students are eligible to work off-campus after completing their first year of study, and can work in on-campus jobs in the meantime.

International students can take advantage of the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, which allows study visa holders to work in their field of study in the US for 12 months after graduation. International students who complete a degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) field are eligible to have their work placement extended for up to 36 months.

Working for a US corporation is a worthwhile opportunity that gives overseas students who work and study in US a distinct advantage in their careers.
