Educating oneself has been a priority for centuries and will continue to be. There are schools and colleges not just in your home country but all around the world. People around the world tend to get their initial education in their home country.

Once they find their interests and earn their high school degrees, they tend to explore more. They discover that exposure is more important than knowledge. Most of us don’t get the privilege to be rich. We have been believing a myth that studying in a foreign country is mighty expensive.

But in reality, it is not true in most cases. Countries like Germany have colleges which might even waive off your tuition fee. Most colleges in Germany do not even cost you a penny. Their reputation for global standards is also high.

The only fee which you would have to bear is the living expenses. But once this myth is broken, people have come up with a new one. There is this general statement that Germany does not provide education in English. This myth has been found in circulation a lot.

While it is true that some colleges in Germany might need German knowledge, but it is not necessary for all subjects. And 80% of the colleges in Germany offer education in English. It is more common in German Colleges to have German education in Undergraduate Level.

Most colleges have adapted to English education at a Masters level a long time ago. This is due to the increased number of international students which Germany takes in each year.

Germany takes in around 3,50,000 students each year who belong to other countries. They would not be there if they find it hard to adapt. Let’s see how!

Getting an English education in Germany

It is known for a fact that German colleges offer free education. Most students get themselves into a false belief that it is that easy. It is not! German colleges which offer free education are public colleges most of the times. This means that the college is owned by the Government.

This, in turn, means that most undergrad courses offered by the University are in German. German Academic Exchange Service has an exclusive service tool. The tool goes by the name of the “International Program search tool”.

You can filter down the number of colleges which offer undergrad education in English. When you do that, you will find that only about 100 hundred universities do that. Try narrowing down the search by adding free education. Only 60 colleges would turn up.

This should give you a basic idea of how difficult it is to get into a college with free education. Getting English education along with free tuition is difficult. Now let me tell you something. It is not a dream either. There are a lot of private colleges in Germany which provide English education.

These are colleges which fall on the top rankings. There is one other good news for you. Their tuition fee is still going to be much lower than other colleges in the USA. Study-in.de is another search tool which is made especially for this.

You apply the same filter without the free education part; it is going to show you more than 200 colleges. Most of these are going to be private colleges. But their tuition-free is going to be less. Are you a person who has interests in Business or Engineering courses? Today is your lucky day.

Most of these courses in German colleges are offered only in English. As these courses attract more population from around the globe, they have shifted their medium entirely to English.

There are expensive universities too. But they are less in numbers. If I have to give you one example, take Jacobs University Bremen. It is the only college in that tool which has a fee of 20,000 EUR on that list. This goes for the mathematics undergrad which they offer in English.

Their psychology degree is also offered in English. That is also offered at the same price of 20,000 EUR. But most colleges offer management and business degrees for either a very low fee or completely free.

Explore other options too!

Students often tend to overlook all the options. They often fall for the easiest ones. ESCP Europe is a popular business school which has its branches all around Europe. When you enroll yourself here, you get the opportunity to study their Bachelor in Management program.

It is available for very low tuition in the capital cities of Berlin, Paris and London. The fee might be different for both the European and Non-EU residents. For now, the fee is around 14,000 EUR and 19,000 EUR for the former and the latter.

The same college offers you a chance to study their Post-grad courses in Management. It is available in major cities like Madrid, London, Warsaw, Berlin, and Turin. If you plan on studying in English but also study for free in Germany. You must start shifting your focus of the search.

When you start looking out for colleges you tend to start with the big ones. Or colleges which have top rankings. But colleges which offer free education are often the smaller ones. Specialized colleges are the ones who actually offer free English education in Germany.

If you already have an undergrad degree in Science or Technology and if you are looking out to get some real experience along with a degree, you must check out Germany’s Universities of Applied Sciences. But do not forget this only applied to students who have prior knowledge in the field.

When you start looking for colleges, do not completely omit the rankings. But also do not completely focus your watch based on it. You must look at the reputation which the college has for a specific course. There are several resources online which can tell you that. You might as well get in contact with your seniors or alumni on Linkedin.

Specific Universities offering English courses

Like mentioned before it is unlikely to have a top university to have an English undergrad course. Even if it does there are very fewer chances for you to get your desired course.

So if you still need your bachelor’s from a reputed university, you should be ready and open to a different program which is available. This is because your course availability might be less.

Types of Higher Education Institutions in Germany

There are mainly two types of higher education institution in Germany. The type of institution that is right for you will depend on your interests and career plans.

  • Technical Universities
  • Universities of applied sciences

Technical Universities:

Universities mainly impart theoretical knowledge. The course is very academically oriented and there are many different subject groups. But many universities specialize in a specific subject area. These are called technical universities (Technische Universität, TU) or colleges of education (Pädagogische Hochschule, PH). At a university, you can also study for a doctorate (doctoral degree). This is not possible in most Universities of Applied Sciences.

Universities of Applied Sciences:

Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen and Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften) offer practice-oriented academic courses. The focus is more on professional application than theory, and the training is adapted to the requirements of professional life. As at universities, the first degree is the bachelor’s, and the second is the master’s. The range of subjects comprises fields such as technology, economics, social work or medicine. During the practical phases, which form part of the course of study and can last one or more semesters depending on the degree programme, the focus is on work placements and longer

project phases at companies in Germany and abroad.

To conclude with

Germany offers top class education. For people who have a very low budget for their education, there is no better destination than Germany. The entire country is a popular tourist attraction.

The palaces and buildings which have been around for centuries make up for a fantastic vacation. But guess what? You get to watch them for free if you manage to get there.

Most people choose Germany only for free education which most universities offer. Do not be like them. Choose a university because it satisfies your wants and needs.

This article would have taught some sense about how difficult it is. To find a program which is free but also is taught in English.

Let us summarize. If you are a student who has just passed out of high school, you have two options. You can either complete your Bachelors in your home country. This is because public universities in Germany who offer English programs in their Undergrad are rare.

Even if they do they would be private universities that might not satisfy your dream of free education. The second option is to be flexible in the course which you want to pursue further.

It is also a really good idea to pursue your Master’s degree in Germany. It is not going to be trouble to find English universities for them. They are pretty common and full of numbers. Make wise choices to avoid troubles and confusion.

Germany is now a leading country in Construction and Technology. It is also a major superpower on a global scale. There are plenty of job opportunities here for everyone. You just have to put enough time and effort when it comes to shortlisting the universities.

The rankings are not always the priority. You must choose universities which are located in popular locations. This will ensure that you end up with a job. The ranking is just numbers that are meant to make your search easier. Look beyond that.
